So what’s the problem?

We are very lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country – and the world. But it’s not all as green and pleasant as it looks – and we’re doing what we can to drive improvements to the quality of the air we breathe.

Air pollution is a serious public health issue. You often can’t see it, or smell it, but air pollution kills. It is linked to up to 36,000 early deaths a year in the UK. It affects the wellbeing of us all, especially those with existing medical conditions. Everyone deserves to breathe clean, safe air that is (as a minimum) within internationally agreed limits.

“Clean air is a basic requirement of human health and wellbeing. Air pollution, however, continues to pose a significant threat to health worldwide.”

World Health Organisation Air Quality Guidelines

Warwick District Council figures show that traffic emissions are the biggest cause of local air pollution so Clean Air Warwickshire is focusing on changing the way we travel to and move around our county.

“Air pollution is associated with a number of adverse health impacts. It is recognised as a contributing factor in the onset of heart disease and cancer. Additionally, air pollution particularly affects the most vulnerable in society: children and older people, and those with heart and lung conditions.”

Improve our county

We know that clean air is a key improvement that people want. As a result, local government, businesses, individuals and households across Warwickshire are all doing things to help promote a better, cleaner environment.

You CAN make a difference!

If you live, work, visit, shop or spend your leisure time in a polluted area, there are some simple things you can do to drive air pollution levels down for yourself, your family and your neighbours. Here are just a few. (Send your own suggestions to contact@cleanairwarwickshire.uk and we will add them here.)

  •  Make cleaner travel choices, and active travel choices
  •  Don’t idle your car engine when you’re stationary
  •  Walk to school
  •  Cycle to work
  •  Drive economically
  •  Use public transport
  •  Burn less wood and coal
  •  Invest in solar panels

Doing what you can really makes a difference, perhaps you would like to spread that message still wider by getting more involved. Why not join us?
